If necessary, you can review the the IPlan Assignment sheet here. Complete the process shown in the diagram below by following the steps and answering the questions for each step.
a. Review your journal entries RJ1 and RJ3 for your original assessment of your needs and strengths as well as the needs of your students.
b. Complete the Teaching Self Assessment based on one of the lessons you taught last week. Be sure to write down specific evidence from either your lesson plan or your memory of your enactment for each assessment you give. Use a highlighter to identify areas of your teaching/lesson that were either below standard or that you feel needs improvement.
a. Review your school improvement document(s). (If you forgot them, download a SALT visit.)
b. Synthesize your review by completing the following table as best your can:
What is the need?
How will improvement help your students?
How will improvement help your school?
RIBT Standard/Element Addressed?
1.
Reading Comprehension
Students will read to learn instead of viewing reading as "decoding". It will allow students to become more independent in their direction of learning rather than rely on their teachers.
As a whole, being able to read and comprehend the text will improve school scores as well as boost the success rate of the town. (ie: higher graduation number as well as better job employment, etc.)
2.2, 2.3, 2.7, 5.1, 5.3,
2.
Writing Skills
Students who write well will understand the essence of assigned tasks. They will recognize the importance of the writing process, and effectively use it.
Their work will be organized and coherent; it will flow with relevant detail. Students will be able to understand what is asked of them and successfully complete all assignments.
2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.5, 3.2
3.
Application of Mathematics to other subjects
Students will gain an understanding of the connection of math to other subjects and therefore will apply what they know coherently.
The school will improve in terms of standardized scores. Also, all subjects will be able to follow state standards in regards to applying subjects into other subjects. For example, applying math to science.
1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 2.1, 2.2,
4.
Consistent quality teaching
Students will be highly engaged in learning.
Teachers who are enthusiastic in their teachings and try their hardest to provide differential instruction will harvest higher productivity from all students. This will create success and boost student morale.
1.3, 4.1, 4.2, 5.4, 5.5, 6.1-6.7
Formulate a professional development goal based the needs that you have identified. This goal should be:
measurable/observable
should lead to improvement of teaching, student achievement, and/or improvement of learning environment.
should describe new knowledge or skills that you will acquire and how that knowledge/skill will affect the school/district setting.
linked to applicable Rhode Island Beginning Teacher Standards and elements, e.g. RIBTS 2.4.
In the space below, describe your professional development goal. In a second paragraph, use the information above to provide a rationale for your goal by explaining the personal need that it will address as well as how addressing this goal benefits your students and your school.
I. Professional Development Goal
Based upon current research it seems beneficial as a new teacher to develop practices that will help students in terms of literacy, mathematics and classroom engagement. For the last several weeks that I have been teaching I have witnessed students' work that is below average in terms of reading comprehension and level, sentence formation, grammatical and punctuation utilization. Having a competent background in how to teach proper literary will benefit those with and without special needs. People say that 'knowledge is power', and I find it hardly acquirable if one is not able to read or write beyond the basic level. In terms of mathematics, it seems that many students choose this as their favorite topic because it is fun and challenging. However, most do not see the correlation when introducing math into another subject, such as science. Being able to consistently understand topics throughout the disciplines is important for higher order thinking and student well-roundedness. In order for students to improve upon literacy and application of mathematics they must feel engaged within the classroom. This is imperative for any learning environment. As a new teacher I must exhibit more than conceptual knowledge; enthusiasm and creativeness should drive the way in which I teach my subject so as to gain the engagement of my students.
Overall, It will be my goal to seek help from peers, professors and professional articles to learn about modern techniques to incorporate these needed learning skills into my lessons. This personal growth as a new teacher will help in fulfilling the Rhode Island Beginning Teacher Standards as well as being coherent to students' needs. In terms of literacy the RIBTS states in category 2 that teachers should 'use a variety of explanations and multiple representations of concepts including analogies, metaphors, experiments, demonstrations, and illustrations, that help students develop conceptual understanding.' I believe that this would work well in teaching students appropriate literacy skills. In terms of applying mathematics to other subjects, RIBTS 1.2 reads teachers 'should use a broad knowledge base to create interdisciplinary learning experiences.' And lastly, RIBTS 5.4 and 5.5 talk about the importance of engaging students in learning. RIBTS 5.4 reads that teachers must 'engage students in generating knowledge, testing hypotheses, and exploring methods of inquiry and standards of evidence' while 5.5 states teachers must 'use tasks that engage students in exploration, discovery, and hands-on activities.'
Now that you have a PD goal, think about what type of learning opportunities you will participate in to address your needs. Use these links to investigate learning options:
Based on what you have found out, write a 1-2 paragraph narrative outlining at least two ways (PD categories) you will engage in engage in by the end of your first year of teaching. For each activity, explain how you think it will address the need that you have identified.
II. Professional Development Plan
To boost my knowledge in how to teach students better literacy I plan to team up with colleagues in the English department. I will ask that they help me in terms of planning lessons that incorporate literacy and advertise its benefit to the students. Also, there are graduate courses tailored to literacy that I hope to attend within my first year of teaching. Educational websites with professional articles will also be an easy, convenient way to learn about modern day literacy practices.
I hope to team up with the mathematics teacher while in my first year (and many after that) so that we may correlate our topics. For example, if I am teahicng students anything to do with statistics or numerical information (for example, the types of different animals living in several hectares of an ecosystem) I will have my students engage in graphing to scale or completing different types of graphs. If I am in a high school where "team settings" are not the norm I still plan on requesting a meeting so that my students will apply what they are learning in both classes.
Throughout my first year of teaching I plan to attend seminars which relay the most up to date and successful ways to engage students in classroom learning. I hope to find ways that will benefit those with and without special needs. I am aspiring to teach collaborative classes which integrate all types of learners and feel that this is beneficial to my life long learning process.
